I have compiled a list based on the common questions I receive on a day to day basis during the quoting procedure. I hope this information will assist you. Please contact me if you have any other queries.

How much will it cost to get a new website?

Generally the pricing can be between $600 - $5000 and ofcourse depends on the size, features and design work involved for each project, please contact me and I can provide a quote based on your specific requirements.

Can you host my own web development project?

Yes, I do this for a number of clients already. I can also register your domain name if needed but if you have this sorted already, I can still provide the hosting service on its own (the domain name and hosting do not have to be with the same supplier). I will provide cPanel acccess so you can install and manage your website files, database and email accounts.

Will I still need my ISP once I have web hosting?

Yes definitely. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider, like BigPond, Westnet) gives you the internet connection which allows you to browse websites and other online services. Your web hosting service looks after your website and domain emails only - It provides the online storage (on a web server) for your website files and your domain emails. If you still want internet access, you would NOT want to cancel your ISP service. You will need both services, they provide separate functions.

Do you design logos or create flyers?

No, I specialise in web and internet based design and marketing. Print based design requires different skills and software. I can refer you to other print related business specialists and I can work with them to ensure your branding follows through consistently across your digital and printed media.

Can you update the design of our old website?

I would need to check your particular website as it depends on its age, how it is constructed and what work is involved in updating the site. Most often, it is far quicker and more cost effective to start again rather than try and revamp an existing website which is based on old layout techniques.

Can you copy a website that I like for my own design?

No, this will infringe copyright legislation and its not professional to copy another design. I can however ask you to tell me what you like about this website and any others and then design a website with the criteria you are looking for. You may even get inspiration from other websites in totally different industries to your own. Examples are not essential, most of the time I will design a website without any design input from my clients.

Can I design my own website and get you to create it?

This will depend ofcourse on the idea you provide. You are welcome to provide some form of mockup and I can suggest whether your layout is suitable for a website, most of the time it isn't (or I may have to change it a little). Print graphic design differs greatly to web design but I can apply the look and feel you suggest to a web friendly layout if needed.

If your mockup is not suitable, I will advise you with an explanation and alternative suggestions rather than just proceeding with a layout that I don't believe would work. Alternatively, if your idea will work, I will can certainly code up a website to your design.

Generally if you have no experience in this area, I would advise not to worry about it and leave me to it. Most of my jobs are designed with minimal direction from my clients as they prefer to see what I come up with.

What file formats do you need for my graphics?

For photos, please send jpeg files, for logos and other images, please send gif, pdf, png, jpeg, tiff, eps, ai, psd.

For PDF files that you wish to offer on your site for download, please supply the converted PDF file rather than the raw word document. The formatting on your computer (eg fonts and layout in your word doc) may not follow through to my computer so results may be unpredictable. For a free converting PDF utility, I can recommend: www.primopdf.com.

Unless you have particularly large file sizes or quantity of graphics, please send via email to me at eva@darwinwebdesign.com.au.

Google AnalyticsCan you supply stats on visitors to my website?

Yes, I can add Google Analytics code to your website (strongly recommended!). Google Analytics is a free service and provides very comprehensive website stats. If you would like to have this included, then please follow the following 3 steps:

  1. sign up for a general Google Account
    www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount
  2. then sign up for the Google Analyics service
    www.google.com/analytics
  3. then send me your Google web property ID which is a long number like 'UA-xxxxxxxx-x' (or just copy and paste the entire block of code provided for your website).
