The following video uses a small restaurant in the California as an example, but Google Places can be applied to any type of business no matter what its size or location.
To get started
If you haven't already, sign up for your free general Google account (this can be used for other google services such as website analytics etc)
Create your account with Google Places, and click for the 'free signup', follow the easy step by step instructions
